The SPYC was created around the existence of the fleet of Small Point One-Design (SPOD) sloop sail boats. SPYC’s membership is loosely congruent with the past and present owners of these sailboats, crews and spectators. The 19-½ foot sloops were designed in 1937 for Governor Sumner Sewall and friends by W. Starling Burgess, noted designer of several America's Cup defenders. In the 1970s, volunteers from the Small Point community created a mooring system for the fleet at the foot of Small Point Harbor behind Goose Rock. This “string” was expanded in 2021 to 25 hulls. The dual strings are
maintained by SPYC, SPOC and those sailors who use the moorings. Some thirty SPOD hulls still exist and, with one or two exceptions, remain today an active part of the Small Point fleet.
